Schengen visa insurance when applying from Nigeria
As of August 31, 2026, no Schengen mission page we could open publishes an accepted-insurer list for Nigeria. Italy's Lagos consulate instead has applicants sign an insurance declaration; the standard Article 15 rules (EUR 30,000) apply.
Insurer lists published by consulates and visa centres in Nigeria
Some Schengen missions publish a list of insurers whose certificates they accept. These are the lists we found for applications lodged here, each with its own date.
| Destination | Issuing authority | List date | Named insurers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italy | Authority:Consulate General of Italy, Lagos | List date:undated form, served from the consulate's August 2024 upload path; read August 31, 2026 | Named insurers:none — an applicant-signed declaration, not an insurer list |
| Netherlands | Authority:Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands (netherlandsworldwide.nl) | List date:undated page; read August 31, 2026 | Named insurers:none — 'take out insurance with another insurer' if yours cannot issue compliant proof |
No Schengen mission publishes an accepted-insurer list for Nigeria on any page we could open on August 31, 2026. The one Nigeria-specific insurance instrument located is the Lagos declaration above: an applicant-signed statement rather than a list, with the added requirement that claims be 'recoverable in the Schengen Area, Switzerland or Liechtenstein'. The Netherlands row is the ministry's general insurance requirement as it applies to Nigerian applications through its TLScontact intake; it names no insurers either. The German (nigeria.diplo.de), French (france-visas.gouv.fr), Swiss, Spanish, Finnish, Danish and Swedish pages for Nigeria refused automated retrieval (HTTP 403/404/503/520) on the check date — every attempt is recorded in sources, and nothing from those missions is summarized from secondary sources.
What applies specifically in Nigeria
Local practice
Two practices verified at the source, both read August 31, 2026. First: the Consulate General of Italy in Lagos requires a signed 'Declaration on Travel Health Insurance' — validity that 'corresponds to or exceeds the duration of my intended trip', 'Minimum Insurance Coverage: 30,000 € per person', 'Claims against the Insurance Company are recoverable in the Schengen Area, Switzerland or Liechtenstein', cover for 'urgent medical treatment, emergency hospital treatment as well as repatriation to my home country', and preparedness to present 'a similar Travel Health Insurance for all subsequent visits to the Schengen Area' (undated form, August 2024 upload path on conslagos.esteri.it). Second: Dutch applications from Nigeria are lodged at TLScontact — 'the Belgian application centre of TLScontact in Abuja' for residents of 18 listed northern states, 'the French application centre of TLScontact in Lagos' for the rest (netherlandsworldwide.nl); Belgium likewise directs applicants to its TLScontact Visa Application Centre (nigeria.diplomatie.belgium.be, page last updated June 17, 2026).
Where travellers buy
None of the nine policy documents in our verified register records a residence clause that excludes a Nigerian resident (all documents read August 31, 2026). The clauses that do exist are met by residence in Nigeria: AXA Schengen requires a country of residence outside the Schengen zone that 'cannot be the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA)' (Essential GTC July 2026, §3.3, p. 10; same clause in the Basic and Annual documents — /check/axa-schengen-low-cost, /check/axa-schengen-europe-travel, /check/axa-schengen-multi-trip); Chapka has the buyer confirm 'You are not a resident of a country or territory of the Schengen Area' (General Conditions p. 8 — /check/chapka-cap-schengen); MondialCare requires 'tax and/or legal residence ... outside the Schengen area' (§ 1.1 — /check/mondialcare-schengen). Europ Assistance states an age cap, 'beneficiaries aged 74 or younger', and no residence-country restriction (§ 14 — /check/europ-assistance-schengen); schengen.care is concluded 'for Foreigners', defined as anyone who is not a citizen of Poland (/check/schengen-care); the DR-WALTER PROVISIT-VISUM and EKTA rows record no residence restriction (/check/dr-walter-provisit-visum, /check/ekta-travel-schengen). Nigerian insurers commonly market Schengen policies — AXA Mansard states its travel cover 'is accepted by all Schengen embassies', Leadway markets cover at the EUR 30,000 minimum (both read on the insurers' own pages, August 31, 2026) — but those acceptance claims are the sellers' own, and no Nigerian policy document has been verified by us.
Most-applied destinations
Not ranked by us. Per-consulate application volumes for Nigeria sit in the European Commission's 'Visa statistics for consulates (2025)' workbook (published May 28, 2026); we downloaded it on August 31, 2026 but did not extract per-country figures from the spreadsheet. What the intake structures we verified show: Italy operates through its Consulate General in Lagos, Belgium and the Netherlands through TLScontact centres in Abuja and Lagos (all read August 31, 2026).

Checked on
No Schengen mission page we could open on August 31, 2026 publishes an accepted-insurer list for Nigeria. The one Nigeria-specific insurance instrument we located comes from Italy: the Consulate General of Italy in Lagos has applicants sign a 'Declaration on Travel Health Insurance' stating a minimum cover of '30,000 € per person', validity that 'corresponds to or exceeds the duration of my intended trip', and that 'Claims against the Insurance Company are recoverable in the Schengen Area, Switzerland or Liechtenstein' (undated form on the consulate's site, August 2024 upload path, read August 31, 2026). The form names no insurers.
Refund terms matter more than usual here: the European Commission put Nigeria's refusal rate at 45.9% for 2024, up from 40.8% in 2023 (news release of May 20, 2025, read August 31, 2026). Which policy documents state a premium refund after a refusal, and at what fee, is compared on refunds if your visa is refused.
Intake is split by destination. The Netherlands lodges Nigerian applications at 'the Belgian application centre of TLScontact in Abuja' (residents of 18 listed northern states) or 'the French application centre of TLScontact in Lagos' (all others), and Belgium directs applicants to its TLScontact Visa Application Centre (netherlandsworldwide.nl, read August 31, 2026; Belgian federal page last updated June 17, 2026).
Nigerian insurers market Schengen policies: AXA Mansard states its travel cover 'is accepted by all Schengen embassies', Leadway markets cover at the EUR 30,000 minimum (both read on the insurers' own pages, August 31, 2026). Those acceptance claims are the sellers' own; no Nigerian policy document is in our verified register. The German, French, Swiss, Spanish and Danish mission pages for Nigeria refused automated retrieval on the check date; they are recorded as unverified, not summarized secondhand. The legal floor itself is uniform: Article 15's requirements apply from every country of application.
Questions from applicants in Nigeria
Do Schengen embassies in Nigeria publish lists of approved travel insurers?
Not on any page we could open on August 31, 2026. The one Nigeria-specific insurance instrument we located is a signed 'Declaration on Travel Health Insurance' from the Consulate General of Italy in Lagos, and it names no insurers. Several mission sites for Nigeria — Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, Denmark — refused automated retrieval that day and are recorded as unverified.
Can you use a Nigerian insurer for a Schengen visa application?
No mission page we could open on August 31, 2026 excludes one, and none endorses one. Italy's Lagos declaration requires that 'Claims against the Insurance Company are recoverable in the Schengen Area, Switzerland or Liechtenstein'; whether a given Nigerian policy states that is a matter for its own document, and none is in our verified register. AXA Mansard's 'accepted by all Schengen embassies' is the seller's claim, not verified by us.
How often are Schengen visa applications from Nigeria refused?
45.9% of applications in 2024, up from 40.8% in 2023, per the European Commission (news release of May 20, 2025, read August 31, 2026). The global refusal rate for 2025 was 14.6%; the Commission's per-country 2025 figures sit in its consulates workbook (published May 28, 2026), which we have not extracted. Per-policy refund terms after a refusal are compared on /refunds-if-visa-refused.
Is the EUR 30,000 insurance minimum different when you apply from Nigeria?
No. Article 15(3) of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 sets the same floor from every country of application: minimum EUR 30,000, valid in the Schengen states, covering the entire intended stay. The Lagos declaration words it 'Minimum Insurance Coverage: 30,000 € per person'; the Dutch requirement reads 'at least €30,000 in medical expenses' (both read August 31, 2026).
