Does my policy meet the Schengen visa insurance requirement?

A policy qualifies if its wording states EUR 30,000 minimum cover, validity in all Schengen states for the entire stay, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment, repatriation for medical reasons, and death (Visa Code Art. 15, checked August 30, 2026).

01 Does your policy state at least €30,000 of medical cover?

The figure must appear in the policy document itself, not only on the marketing page.

02 Does it state that it is valid in ALL Schengen states?

Look for “Schengen area” or “all Schengen states” — a list missing one state fails Article 15(3).

03 Does it cover your entire intended stay?

The start and end dates on the certificate must enclose every day on your application.

04 Does it state repatriation for medical reasons and urgent medical attention?

Article 15(1) also names emergency hospital treatment and death.

How to read your answers

  • Four times “yes” — your policy states what Article 15 requires.
  • Any “not sure” — find the clause in the document before your appointment; wording you cannot point to is wording the consulate cannot accept.
  • Any “no” — a certificate that does not state a requirement does not prove it.

What the certificate must show

  • Your full name, matching your passport.
  • The amount: €30,000 or more, in figures, on the certificate itself.
  • A territory line naming the Schengen area or all Schengen states.
  • Start and end dates that enclose every day of your intended stay.
  • The Article 15(1) wording: repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment, death.
  • The policy document (terms or IPID) the certificate refers to, in case the consulate asks for it.

What must the policy state under Article 15?

The six requirements sit in Article 15(1) and 15(3) of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 (EUR-Lex, CELEX 02009R0810, consolidated version of June 11, 2024, checked August 30, 2026). Each card quotes the regulation verbatim — hospital treatment and death stand in a single phrase in the regulation itself, so they share one card.

  • Art. 15(1)

    Repatriation for medical reasons

“any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons”
  • Art. 15(1)

    Urgent medical attention

    “urgent medical attention”
  • Art. 15(1)

    Emergency hospital treatment or death

“emergency hospital treatment or death, during their stay(s) on the territory of the Member States”
  • Art. 15(3)

    Valid in all Schengen states

“The insurance shall be valid throughout the territory of the Member States”
  • Art. 15(3)

Coverage for the entire period of stay or transit

“cover the entire period of the person's intended stay or transit”
  • Art. 15(3)

    Minimum coverage of EUR 30,000

“The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30 000.”

What else do applicants ask?

Is EUR 30,000 the legal minimum, or do consulates require EUR 50,000?

EUR 30,000. Article 15(3) reads: “The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30 000” — and no EUR 50,000 amount appears anywhere in Article 15 (EUR-Lex, CELEX 02009R0810, checked August 30, 2026).

The EUR 50,000 figure circulates on advice sites without a citation to any provision (observed August 30, 2026). The full paragraph, taken apart line by line: the EUR 30,000 rule.

Does the insurance have to be valid in all Schengen countries, or only the one I visit?

In all of them. Article 15(3) requires the insurance to be “valid throughout the territory of the Member States” — the destination on your itinerary does not narrow that (EUR-Lex, CELEX 02009R0810, checked August 30, 2026). One exception: for a visa with limited territorial validity covering more than one state, cover must be “valid at least in the Member States concerned”.

Which states that means today: Schengen states and validity.

Can my existing travel insurance qualify, or do I need a special Schengen policy?

It can, if its wording states the required covers. Article 15 asks applicants to “prove that they are in possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance” — it names no insurer and no product type (checked August 30, 2026). What counts is what the policy document states, in writing.

Two caveats. Consulates and visa application centers such as VFS Global publish their own lists of accepted insurers per country of application (seen August 30, 2026). And the checker above answers only for policies whose documents we have read — a policy that is absent is unverified, not failed.

Does the policy need to cover medical evacuation?

The word “evacuation” does not appear in Article 15 — the regulation requires “repatriation for medical reasons” (EUR-Lex, CELEX 02009R0810, checked August 30, 2026).

Some policy wordings use the industry term “emergency medical evacuation” instead. The two are not the same wording, and the matrix records each document's exact words, so you can see which term your policy states.

Do you sell insurance or earn money when I pick a policy?

No. CoverMandate sells no insurance, and as of August 31, 2026 the site carries no advertising and no commission links. No insurer has paid to appear here.

The site publishes one thing: where, in each policy document, the Article 15 requirements stand — with document version, section, and check date. If commission links are ever added, each will be labeled at the link itself. Who operates the site: who we are.
