No Schengen mission in South Africa published a retrievable accepted-insurer list on our check date, August 31, 2026. The one dedicated mission insurance page we located — the Embassy of Lithuania in Pretoria's 'Valid travel medical insurance' — blocked automated retrieval with HTTP 403 on two URL paths that day, as it had earlier the same week, so nothing from it is reproduced here. VFS Global pages returned HTTP 403 across the board. The German business checklist of March 18, 2026 is the only mission instruction we read in full. Capago's four named insurers sit behind a commercial comparator referral, which is marketing placement, not mission acceptance.

Local practice
Three outsourced providers operate side by side, split by destination. Germany: 'Schedule an appointment to hand in your application at one of the Visa Application Centres of the external service Provider TLScontact' — and TLS stopped accepting cash payments as of September 1, 2025 (southafrica.diplo.de, read August 31, 2026). France: Capago centres in Johannesburg (Sandton), Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth, files 'instructed by the French general Consulates in Johannesburg', plural as printed (fr-za.capago.eu, read August 31, 2026). The Netherlands: 'go to the VFS Global application centre in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg or Pretoria' (netherlandsworldwide.nl, read August 31, 2026). The German Missions in South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini process an application only if the main destination is Germany, at an average of 15 processing days, and their checklist dated March 18, 2026 states the insurance requirement — EUR 30,000, all Schengen countries, the requested stay — without any deductible or excess rule and without naming insurers.
Where travellers buy
Six policies in this site's matrix carry verdict states-all-requirements and print no eligibility bar for South African residents, all documents read August 31, 2026: AXA Schengen Low Cost, Essential and Multi Trip require residence outside the Schengen zone and exclude only UK and US residents (GTC July 2026, p. 10); Europ Assistance Schengen prints an age cap of 74 at purchase and no residence-country exclusion (§ 14, p. 4); MondialCare requires 'tax and/or legal residence ... outside the Schengen area', without age limit (§ 1.1, p. 3); schengen.care insures any non-Polish citizen, with no residence-country restriction (GTC Article 2 item 3, Article 5 section 3). Italy's consulates took the largest share of South Africa's 2025 Schengen applications: just over 33,500 of the 195,946 filed, with nearly 183,800 visas granted and a 5.3 percent refusal rate — reported June 2, 2026 by South African trade publication Travelnews, citing European Commission statistics (read August 31, 2026). The Commission's own release of May 28, 2026 reports more than 12 million applications globally for 2025 but publishes no South Africa breakdown in it; we could not retrieve the consulate-level dataset directly.
