Schengen visa insurance when applying from Thailand

Schengen missions in Bangkok work from one common accepted-insurer list — 45 companies in the EU Delegation's update of November 26, 2024. Policies from insurers based in Europe are accepted without listing. Documents read August 31, 2026.

Insurer lists published by consulates and visa centres in Thailand

Some Schengen missions publish a list of insurers whose certificates they accept. These are the lists we found for applications lodged here, each with its own date.

One list, several vintages. The current document is headed 'EU Local Schengen Coordination : Bangkok' with 'Last update: 26 November 2024', and insurers that want to be added are directed to the EU Delegation in Bangkok (delegation-thailand-pi@eeas.europa.eu). Individual missions serve their own copies, and on August 31, 2026 those copies aged at different speeds: the German and Austrian sites served the November 2024 update, Luxembourg's site the March 2024 update, Poland's site an older undated table, and a legacy VFS path an early vintage of 25 rows. Between March and November 2024 the list changed: ERGO (Thailand) and Insurverse were added; Mitsui Sumitomo, Safety Insurance and Thaisri no longer appear, and ERGO is printed at the address the March update listed for Thaisri. Two reproduced-as-printed caveats: the embassy copies frame the table as Thailand-based companies, yet the row Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A. prints a Hong Kong address; and one row carries two names, Thanachart and AXA Insurance Thailand. The document states it 'is not an endorsement of any insurance company.' Practical consequence: check the update line on the copy your consulate links before relying on a name.

What applies specifically in Thailand

Local practice

Stated by the missions themselves, all documents read August 31, 2026. Two doors: the Luxembourg copy (update of March 26, 2024) accepts 'a policy from an insurance company based in Europe (EU or EFTA Member State)' or a listed Thai company; the Polish copy states 'Only the listed insurance companies are accepted by the embassies of the Schengen Countries in Bangkok.' and 'If you provide insurance from a different company based in Thailand, the policy will not be accepted.'; the Czech page (updated December 2, 2024) allows Czech-based insurers and, for Thai companies, only those in its attached list. Amount: 'The sum insured has to exceed 1.5 million THB or 30.000 Euro.' (Polish copy; Luxembourg prints 'THB1.5 million or €30,000'). Article 15(3) of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 states a minimum of EUR 30,000 and prints no baht figure (CELEX 02009R0810, consolidated version of June 11, 2024, verified for this site on August 30, 2026); we quote both and adjudicate neither. Refund expectation: applicants are asked to notify the mission if an insurer 'refuses to give full refund in case of visa refusal upon presentation of official proof of rejection from the Embassy' (Luxembourg copy; the Polish copy words it as refusing 'to fully refund costs of insurance purchase'). The November 26, 2024 EU Delegation document itself is worded descriptively — 'The following companies provide travel insurance that comply with the Schengen Visa Code requirements' — and closes with 'This is not an endorsement of any insurance company.'; the exclusivity sentence and the baht figure stand in the embassy copies, not in that document.

Where travellers buy

Under the Europe door of the Bangkok instruction, these CoverMandate-verified policies are underwritten by EU- or EFTA-based insurers, and their printed eligibility terms, read August 31, 2026, do not exclude residents of Thailand: AXA Schengen Low Cost, Essential and Multi Trip (Inter Partner Assistance SA, Brussels — residence must lie outside the Schengen zone and 'cannot be the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA)', GTC §3.3); Europ Assistance Schengen (Europ Assistance SA Irish Branch — buyers aged 74 or younger at purchase, §14); MondialCare Schengen (Groupama Rhône-Alpes Auvergne — residence outside the Schengen area, no age limit, §1.1); schengen.care (Inter Partner Assistance S.A., Polish branch — concluded for Foreigners, meaning anyone who is not a Polish citizen); Chapka Cap Schengen (Ressources Mutuelles Assistance — the buyer must not be a resident of the Schengen Area, §II); DR-WALTER PROVISIT-VISUM (Würzburger Versicherungs-AG — no residence-based purchase restriction found in the conditions); Allianz Secure Health (AWP P&C S.A., sold on Allianz Travel's Swiss site — primary residence outside Schengen, under 81). Two verified policies are underwritten outside Europe and stand on neither side of the printed instruction: EKTA (IC Auras Insurance LLC, Union of Comoros) and WorldTrips Atlas Travel (TMHCC (CI) Insurance SPC Ltd, Cayman Islands) — not Europe-based and not on the Bangkok list; the instruction names no third category, and whether a consulate accepts such a policy is not something these documents state. The Thailand-based companies on the common list — AXA Insurance PCL, Chubb Samaggi, Muang Thai, Dhipaya, LUMA Care, Pacific Cross and the rest — are commonly listed but not verified by us: CoverMandate has not read their policy wordings. One name trap: 'AXA Insurance Public Co.,Ltd.' on the Bangkok list is a Thai company; the AXA Schengen products sold at axa-schengen.com are underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance SA, Brussels — different entities within the same group.

Most-applied destinations

Not yet verified from the primary dataset. The European Commission publishes consulate-level figures ('Visa statistics for consulates', annual xlsx files through 2025; index page read August 31, 2026) that break down applications lodged in Thailand per destination state; we did not parse the spreadsheet in this run and publish no ranking until we have. What the Commission's 2024 summary does state (news item of May 20, 2025): the five largest origin countries worldwide were China, Türkiye, India, Morocco and Russia — Thailand is not among them.

Thailand is one of the few application countries where the accepted-insurer question has a single, central answer. Schengen missions in Bangkok work from a common list — the current document is headed 'EU Local Schengen Coordination : Bangkok' and dated November 26, 2024 — naming 45 companies, and insurers that want to be added are directed to the EU Delegation to Thailand. A policy from an insurer based in Europe needs no listing: Luxembourg's copy words it as 'an insurance company based in Europe (EU or EFTA Member State)', and the Polish copy adds that a Thai policy from an unlisted company 'will not be accepted' (both read August 31, 2026).

The copies age at different speeds. On August 31, 2026 the German and Austrian embassy sites served the November 2024 update, Luxembourg's site the March 2024 update — 46 companies, still naming Mitsui Sumitomo and Safety Insurance — Poland's site an older undated table of 41, and a legacy VFS path an early vintage of 25 that still lists BUPA. Check the update line on the copy your consulate links.

Two figures sit side by side: the embassy copies ask for a sum insured exceeding THB 1.5 million or EUR 30,000, while Article 15(3) of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 states a minimum of EUR 30,000 and prints no baht figure. The same copies ask applicants to report an insurer that refuses 'full refund in case of visa refusal upon presentation of official proof of rejection' — a refund expectation stated by the missions themselves.

Questions from applicants in Thailand

Which insurance companies do Schengen embassies in Bangkok accept?

A Thailand-based insurer must appear on the common list maintained under EU Local Schengen Coordination in Bangkok — 45 companies in the update of November 26, 2024, including AXA Insurance PCL, Chubb Samaggi, Muang Thai, Dhipaya, LUMA Care and Pacific Cross. An insurer based in Europe (EU or EFTA member state) needs no listing. Both statements come from the mission-published copies, read August 31, 2026.

Is EUR 30,000 or THB 1.5 million the required cover for a Schengen visa from Thailand?

The embassy copies of the Bangkok list state 'The sum insured has to exceed 1.5 million THB or 30.000 Euro.' (Polish copy, read August 31, 2026). Article 15(3) of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 itself states a minimum of EUR 30,000 and prints no baht equivalent (CELEX 02009R0810, consolidated version of June 11, 2024). We quote both and adjudicate neither.

Do the Bangkok embassies expect a premium refund if the visa is refused?

The embassy copies ask applicants to notify the mission if an insurance company 'refuses to give full refund in case of visa refusal upon presentation of official proof of rejection from the Embassy' (Luxembourg copy, update of March 26, 2024; the Polish copy words it as refusing 'to fully refund costs of insurance purchase'; both read August 31, 2026). That expectation is the mission's; what a buyer can enforce is each insurer's own refund clause.

Can a Thai resident buy AXA Schengen or Europ Assistance online instead of a listed Thai insurer?

Their documents state eligibility terms that do not exclude residents of Thailand: AXA Schengen requires residence outside the Schengen zone and not in the UK or USA (General Terms and Conditions July 2026, §3.3); Europ Assistance accepts buyers aged 74 or younger at purchase (§14). Both are Europe-based underwriters — Inter Partner Assistance SA, Brussels, and Europ Assistance SA Irish Branch — and the Bangkok instruction accepts Europe-based insurers without listing. All documents read August 31, 2026.
