Schengen visa insurance when applying from Turkey

None of the Schengen-mission documents we could open for Türkiye names accredited insurers (checked August 31, 2026). All restate the EUR 30,000 rule; German missions add direct-payment and travel-day requirements; Greece's VFS checklist wants euro-denominated cover amounts.

Insurer lists published by consulates and visa centres in Turkey

Some Schengen missions publish a list of insurers whose certificates they accept. These are the lists we found for applications lodged here, each with its own date.

Every document in this table is an insurance instruction, not an accredited-insurer list: none of the documents we could open names an insurance company. Gaps, as of August 31, 2026: iData (idata.com.tr, mandate holder for Germany and Italy in Türkiye), the Greek foreign ministry site (mfa.gr) and the VFS Global application portal (visa.vfsglobal.com) all returned HTTP 403 to our retrieval, so whether iData's own insurance pages or Greek mission pages name insurers is not established — not established is not the same as non-existent. Instructions for Italy, France and Spain applications from Türkiye remain unverified. One oddity reproduced as found: the Greek checklist's filename says Ankara while its employer-letter item references the Aegean-region jurisdiction.

What applies specifically in Turkey

Local practice

German missions in Türkiye publish requirements beyond the Article 15 text, read August 31, 2026, each sentence confirmed on a second retrieval the same day. Payment mechanics: 'Die Versicherung muss eine mögliche Zahlung direkt gegenüber dem Krankenhaus oder dem Arzt erbringen.' — the insurance must be able to pay the hospital or doctor directly; the Turkish-language page matches: 'Sigorta şirketi, oluşabilecek tedavi masraflarını doğrudan hastane veya doktora ödemelidir.' Dates: the German page requires cover for 'den gesamten Ab- und Rückreisetag Ihrer ersten geplanten Reise' (the entire departure and return day); the Turkish page instructs issuing the policy 'seyahat tarihinden bir gün önce ve dönüş tarihinden bir gün sonrasınıda da' (typo as printed) — valid from one day before departure to one day after return. We quote both formulations and adjudicate neither. Proof: 'Diesen Nachweis liefert nur die Originalpolice.' — only the original policy counts; the bilingual information sheet adds that the original is returned after inspection with a copy filed, and puts the iData service fee at 39.92 euros across eight acceptance centres. Greece, via the VFS Türkiye checklist (undated; PDF metadata August 5, 2019, still served on the check date): insurance valid in all Schengen states covering outpatient and inpatient treatment and return on illness or death, minimum EUR 30,000, with the bracketed instruction '(Seyahat sağlık sigortalarının teminatları € olarak yazmalıdır.)' — the cover amounts on the policy must be written in euros, not lira. The Netherlands checklist for Türkiye restates the EUR 30,000 rule with no additions.

Where travellers buy

Every policy our coverage matrix has document-verified so far — nine rows on August 31, 2026 — accepts residents of Türkiye on the conditions we read. AXA Schengen Low Cost, AXA Schengen Europe Travel (sold as Schengen Essential) and AXA Schengen Multi Trip require a country of residence outside the Schengen zone that is not the UK or the USA (General Terms & Conditions July 2026, §3.3). MondialCare requires tax or legal residence outside Schengen, without age limit. Chapka Cap Schengen requires that you are not a resident of a Schengen country. schengen.care is open to anyone who is not a Polish citizen. Europ Assistance Schengen (age 74 or younger at purchase), DR-WALTER PROVISIT-VISUM and EKTA travel state no residence-country exclusion in the documents we read. Domestic route: Turkish insurers sell a dedicated product genre, vize seyahat sağlık sigortası. We read MAPFRE Sigorta's special conditions in full (applicable to policies from August 1, 2011, served as current, read August 31, 2026): a product for insureds residing in Türkiye, a 30,000 limit in the Europe-and-Schengen zone (the table header prints 'EURO / USD'), and a refund ground '2- VİZE ALINAMAMASI' — no visa granted — against a written refusal document from the consulate, a passport copy, the original policy and a petition. We have not verified any Turkish domestic product against our six-requirement matrix. Quick Sigorta, GIG Sigorta, Sompo Sigorta and Aveon Global Sigorta market visa-purpose products — commonly listed, not verified by us.

Most-applied destinations

1,173,917 Schengen applications were lodged in Türkiye in 2024 — the second-largest applicant pool worldwide, up from 1,055,885 in 2023, with the refusal rate down to 14.5% (European Commission news item of May 20, 2025, read August 31, 2026). Greece (296,377), Germany (215,506) and France (151,640) received the most applications from Türkiye, per EU figures as reported by Türkiye Today on May 18, 2025; we did not recompute these three figures from the Commission's consulate dataset (2024-schengen-visa-statistics-consulates_en.xlsx).

Türkiye is the second-largest Schengen applicant pool in the world — 1,173,917 applications in 2024, refusal rate 14.5% (European Commission, May 20, 2025) — yet none of the mission documents we could open on August 31, 2026 publishes a list of accepted insurers. What the missions publish instead is stricter practice.

The German missions state two requirements beyond the Article 15 text. The policy must be able to pay 'doğrudan hastane veya doktora' — directly to the hospital or doctor — and it must be issued so that it is also valid one day before departure and one day after return; the German-language page words the same idea as covering the entire departure and return day. Only the original policy counts as proof. Applications for Germany and Italy run through iData, whose service fee the German information sheet puts at 39.92 euros across eight acceptance centres.

The Greek checklist served under VFS Global's Türkiye path adds a formal rule of its own: the cover amounts on the policy must be written in euros ('teminatlar € olarak yazmalıdır'). The Netherlands checklist for Türkiye restates the EUR 30,000 rule without additions.

Türkiye also has a domestic product genre, vize seyahat sağlık sigortası. MAPFRE Sigorta's special conditions — read in full on August 31, 2026 — build a Türkiye-resident product around a 30,000 limit for the Europe-and-Schengen zone and refund the premium when the consulate refuses the visa, against the written refusal document and the original policy. We have not verified any domestic product against our six-requirement matrix; the nine policies the matrix has verified all accept Türkiye residents on the conditions we read.

Questions from applicants in Turkey

Do German consulates in Türkiye ask more of travel insurance than the EUR 30,000 minimum?

Yes, two things beyond the Article 15 text, read August 31, 2026: the policy must be able to pay the hospital or doctor directly ('Sigorta şirketi, oluşabilecek tedavi masraflarını doğrudan hastane veya doktora ödemelidir.'), and it must be issued to be valid from one day before departure to one day after return. Proof means the original policy: 'Diesen Nachweis liefert nur die Originalpolice.'

Which Schengen states receive the most visa applications lodged in Türkiye?

Greece (296,377), Germany (215,506) and France (151,640) led in 2024, out of 1,173,917 applications — the world's second-largest pool. The total and the rank come from the European Commission's May 20, 2025 statistics release; the per-country split is EU data as reported by Türkiye Today on May 18, 2025, which we did not recompute from the Commission's consulate file.

Can residents of Türkiye buy the international policies in this coverage matrix?

None of the nine document-verified policies excludes residence in Türkiye, on the conditions read August 31, 2026. The three AXA Schengen products require residence outside the Schengen zone and not in the UK or the USA; MondialCare and Chapka Cap Schengen require non-Schengen residence; schengen.care excludes only Polish citizens; Europ Assistance requires age 74 or younger at purchase.

Is there a Turkish domestic insurance product for Schengen visa applications?

Yes — vize seyahat sağlık sigortası, a distinct product genre from Turkish insurers. MAPFRE Sigorta's special conditions, read in full on August 31, 2026, limit the product to residents of Türkiye, print a 30,000 limit for the Europe-and-Schengen zone, and refund the premium if the consulate refuses the visa, against the written refusal document, a passport copy and the original policy. We have not verified any domestic product against our six-requirement matrix.
