Schengen visa insurance when applying from Vietnam

The five Schengen states' instructions for Vietnam we could read on August 31, 2026 — Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Czechia — name no insurer and link no accepted-insurer list; three restate the EUR 30,000 minimum in their own words.

Insurer lists published by consulates and visa centres in Vietnam

Some Schengen missions publish a list of insurers whose certificates they accept. These are the lists we found for applications lodged here, each with its own date.

Every document above is undated; our read date of August 31, 2026 is the only date anchor. The pattern for Vietnam is requirement-restatement without insurer names: no instruction we could read publishes an accepted-insurer list, so a policy is judged against the stated requirements, not against a roster. We also searched, in English and Vietnamese, for a joint accepted-insurer list from EU Local Schengen Cooperation in Vietnam; none surfaced on August 31, 2026 — only agent marketing. France is absent above because its pages could not be read on the check date (HTTP 403 on france-visas.gouv.fr and the TLScontact centre pages), not because it was cleared.

What applies specifically in Vietnam

Local practice

Four practices stand in the primary documents, all read August 31, 2026. Italy pads the dates: under 7 days of stay, 'travel insurance valid for a minimum period of 7 days, counting from the day of arrival in Schengen territory'; from 7 days, cover for 'the entire duration of stay plus to 2 extra days' (as printed), with 'minimum coverage is more than 30.000 Euro' — more than, not at least (VFS instruction for Italy in Vietnam, two identical fetches). Germany prices repatriation into the sum: the checklist item demands cover for 'emergency treatment and transport to home country for medical reasons', and the Hanoi web checklist words it 'Die Deckungssumme für Arztkosten, Krankenhausbehandlung und Kosten für Repatriierung im Krankheits- oder Todesfall muss mindestens 30.000 € betragen' (the sum insured for doctors' costs, hospital treatment and repatriation on illness or death must be at least EUR 30,000). Denmark decides files in Bangkok: the checklist states the file 'will be delivered to the Danish Embassy in Hanoi, and the Danish Embassy in Bangkok will process your case', requires 'repatriation to Vietnam/resident country' in the cover and a certified English translation of every Vietnamese document. The VFS one-pager for the Netherlands repeats 'Travel insurance is mandatory for all Schengen countries.' per visa category and follows it with 'If you have not purchased, please click here' — a link to VFS's own travel-insurance page, so the operator that takes the file also sells a policy alongside it.

Where travellers buy

Of the policies in our matrix with a states-all-requirements or states-most-see-notes verdict, the published conditions of all nine admit or do not exclude a Vietnamese residence, on the documents read August 31, 2026: AXA Schengen Low Cost, Essential (formerly sold as Europe Travel) and Multi Trip require a country of residence outside the Schengen zone that is not the UK or USA (General Terms & Conditions July 2026, §3.3) — a Vietnamese residence qualifies; Europ Assistance Schengen states no residence-country restriction (buyers aged 74 or younger, § 14); MondialCare requires 'tax and/or legal residence ... outside the Schengen area' (§ 1.1); schengen.care is concluded for Foreigners, defined as non-Polish citizens (GTC Article 5.3 with Article 2.3); Chapka Cap Schengen asks that 'You are not a resident of a country or territory of the Schengen Area' (§ II); DR-WALTER PROVISIT-VISUM and EKTA START state no residence restriction in the documents we read. Whether a purchase from Vietnam completes is beyond what document reading shows — these are the eligibility clauses as printed.

Most-applied destinations

Not established. The primary source — the European Commission's annual dataset of applications lodged per consulate — is published as a spreadsheet we could not read on August 31, 2026, and the sites that republish it blocked automated reads the same day (HTTP 403). Rather than copy an unread ranking, this cell stays empty until we read the dataset itself.

Checked on

Five Schengen states' instructions for applicants in Vietnam could be read on August 31, 2026 — Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Czechia — and none names an insurance company or links a list of accepted insurers. Each restates the requirements instead, in its own words, and the words differ. The German missions' bilingual checklist asks for 'compulsory paid travel medical insurance', 'valid for all Schengen states', covering 'the cost of emergency treatment and transport to home country for medical reasons', with 'minimum coverage shall be EUR 30,000' (item 15). Denmark's checklist — lodged at VFS, delivered to the Danish Embassy in Hanoi, decided by the visa section of the Royal Danish Embassy in Bangkok — words the same duty as 'repatriation to Vietnam/resident country' and requires a certified English translation of every Vietnamese document.

Italy's instruction sets the floor higher on paper — 'minimum coverage is more than 30.000 Euro' — and pads the dates: at least 7 insured days for stays under 7 days, and the whole stay 'plus to 2 extra days' from 7 days (as printed). France could not be read: france-visas.gouv.fr's Vietnam page and the TLScontact centre pages returned HTTP 403 on the check date, so this row asserts nothing about France.

Vietnamese insurers sell Schengen-marketed products — PVI, Bảo Việt, Bảo Minh and Liberty recur in local listings; commonly listed, not verified by us. PVI's own page (dated May 29, 2026) claims 'yêu cầu mức bảo hiểm tối thiểu 30.000 EUR' (a minimum of EUR 30,000 is required). We have verified no Vietnamese policy document against Article 15; the verified policies whose printed conditions admit a Vietnamese residence are under local options.

Questions from applicants in Vietnam

Do any Schengen missions in Vietnam publish a list of accepted travel insurers?

None that we could read. On August 31, 2026 the instructions for Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Czechia named no insurance company and linked no accepted-insurer list; each restates the Article 15 requirements in its own words. France's pages could not be read that day (HTTP 403), so we assert nothing about them.

Can a policy from a Vietnamese insurer be used for a Schengen visa application?

The instructions we read on August 31, 2026 specify what the policy must cover, not where the insurer is licensed. PVI's own page (dated May 29, 2026) claims its packages meet the EUR 30,000 visa minimum, and Bảo Việt, Bảo Minh and Liberty recur in local listings — commonly listed, not verified by us: we have read no Vietnamese policy document against Article 15.

How many days of insurance does an Italy application from Vietnam need?

More than the trip. The VFS instruction for Italy in Vietnam (read August 31, 2026, two identical fetches) requires, under 7 days of stay, 'travel insurance valid for a minimum period of 7 days, counting from the day of arrival in Schengen territory', and from 7 days, cover for 'the entire duration of stay plus to 2 extra days' (as printed). The same page sets 'minimum coverage is more than 30.000 Euro'.

Where is a Danish Schengen file from Vietnam actually decided?

Not in Hanoi. The Danish checklist for Vietnam (undated, read August 31, 2026) states: 'Your application and documentation will be delivered to the Danish Embassy in Hanoi, and the Danish Embassy in Bangkok will process your case'. It signs off as 'The Royal Danish Embassy, Bangkok, Visa Section', and its insurance line requires 'repatriation to Vietnam/resident country'.
