Schengen visa insurance when applying from Egypt

Spain's and Italy's visa channels in Egypt publish the same undated list of 19 Egyptian insurers — a brand on it was retired in 2012. Germany's Cairo factsheet adds: no limit or exclusion of treatment. Checked August 31, 2026.

Insurer lists published by consulates and visa centres in Egypt

Some Schengen missions publish a list of insurers whose certificates they accept. These are the lists we found for applications lodged here, each with its own date.

All four documents read by us on August 31, 2026. The Spain (BLS) and Italy (VFS) PDFs name the same nineteen institutions under two variants of one heading — 'Insurance companies in Egypt offering adequate travel medical insurance as required when applying for a Schengen short stay visa' — with per-copy spelling differences (ACE Egypt For Insurance vs Gras Savoye/ACE Insurance Egypt), so the Schengen missions in Egypt appear to share one common list. Neither copy prints a compilation date. Both still list 'Chartis Egypt' and a 'Chartis HSBC Premier Card', and AIG announced on June 28, 2012 that the Chartis business 'will be known simply as AIG starting this fall' — the list predates that rebrand or has not been refreshed since. Germany's and Denmark's instructions name no insurers.

What applies specifically in Egypt

Local practice

Primary instructions only, each read August 31, 2026. German Embassy Cairo (factsheet on TLScontact Egypt's document server): the insurance is checked on three points — valid 'for all Schengen countries in the period applied for', 'The minimum coverage amount is €30,000.', and 'There is no limit or exclusion of treatment (Covid19, pregnancy, age restriction…)'. That third check is Cairo wording; Article 15 of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 says nothing about treatment exclusions. The same factsheet has the applicant confirm that for multiple entries they 'must have adequate travel health insurance for my first stay and each subsequent visit'. Embassy of Denmark in Cairo: 'Travel Medical Insurance (TMI) is compulsory. It should cover all Schengen countries for the whole period of first stay and for a minimum of Euro 30.000.', lodged at VFS Global in Cairo (52 Lebanon Street, Mohandeseen, Giza) or Alexandria (696 Al Horeya Street, Lauran). The deductible instruction known from German posts in India was not found in the Cairo materials we could read.

Where travellers buy

Going by the policy documents alone (all read August 31, 2026), every verified row in our matrix is open to an applicant residing in Egypt; we have not tested a purchase from Egypt. AXA Schengen Low Cost, Europe Travel and Multi Trip: the July 2026 terms bar only UK or US residence (p. 10). MondialCare requires 'tax and/or legal residence … outside the Schengen area' (§ 1.1, p. 3) and Chapka Cap Schengen non-Schengen residence (§ II, p. 8) — residence in Egypt qualifies for both. schengen.care is concluded for foreigners, defined as anyone who is not a Polish citizen (GTC Article 5 § 3). Europ Assistance Schengen (age limit 74 at purchase, § 14), DR-WALTER PROVISIT-VISUM, EKTA travel and WorldTrips Atlas Travel state no residence-based purchase bar in the documents we read. The nineteen Egyptian insurers on the common list are commonly listed, not verified by us: we have not read any of their policy wordings, so our matrix holds no findspots for them.

Most-applied destinations

Not established from a primary source we could read on August 31, 2026. The per-destination application counts for Egypt sit in the European Commission's workbook 2024-schengen-visa-statistics-consulates_en.xlsx ('Short-stay visas issued by Schengen countries', home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, page seen August 31, 2026), which we have not read; SchengenVisaInfo's Egypt compilation returned HTTP 403 to us the same day.

Two of the Schengen application channels in Egypt publish an accepted-insurer list, and it is the same list. The PDF on the Egypt site of BLS International, which operates Spain's visa application centres, and the PDF on VFS Global's Italy–Egypt pages name the same nineteen Egyptian institutions 'offering adequate travel medical insurance as required when applying for a Schengen short stay visa' — from Misr Insurance and Suez Canal Insurance to AMIG and Wethaq Takaful (both read August 31, 2026). Neither copy prints a compilation date; the brand names do the dating. Both still list 'Chartis Egypt' and a 'Chartis HSBC Premier Card', and Chartis is the name AIG announced it would drop on June 28, 2012 — 'known simply as AIG starting this fall'. We have not read any of these nineteen insurers' policy wordings.

The German Embassy Cairo factsheet, published on TLScontact Egypt's document server, checks insurance on three points: valid 'for all Schengen countries in the period applied for', a minimum coverage amount of €30,000, and 'no limit or exclusion of treatment (Covid19, pregnancy, age restriction…)' — a Cairo instruction, not the regulation's text (read August 31, 2026). Held against the documents in our matrix: the Europ Assistance terms set an age limit of 74 at purchase (§ 14, p. 4), and EKTA's wording caps COVID-19 treatment at USD 1,000 (§ 6.4.9). We cite both texts and adjudicate neither.

Denmark states its requirement on its own page — cover for 'the whole period of first stay', minimum 'Euro 30.000' — lodged at VFS Global in Cairo or Alexandria (read August 31, 2026). The pages of France (TLScontact), Switzerland and Greece returned HTTP 403 to us on the check date; this row records only what we could read.

Questions from applicants in Egypt

Is there an official list of accepted insurance companies for a Schengen visa from Egypt?

Two channels publish one: BLS International (Spain) and VFS Global (Italy) each host a PDF naming the same nineteen Egyptian insurers 'offering adequate travel medical insurance as required when applying for a Schengen short stay visa'. Neither copy prints a date, and both still name Chartis — a brand AIG dropped in 2012 (all read August 31, 2026).

Can you use an Egyptian insurance company for a Schengen visa application?

The published common list names nineteen Egyptian insurers as adequate, including Misr Insurance, Allianz Egypt and Suez Canal Insurance (read August 31, 2026). We have not read any of these companies' policy wordings, so our matrix holds no verified findspots for them; the policy itself must still state the Article 15 covers, the EUR 30,000 minimum included.

What does the German Embassy in Cairo check on your travel insurance?

Three points, per its factsheet on TLScontact Egypt's document server (read August 31, 2026): the insurance 'is valid for all Schengen countries in the period applied for', 'The minimum coverage amount is €30,000.', and 'There is no limit or exclusion of treatment (Covid19, pregnancy, age restriction…)'. For multiple entries, cover is required for the first stay and each subsequent visit.
